Estimated level
Your serve and return are reliable and usually deep. You get to the kitchen line most points, you can keep a dink rally going and your drop works more often than not. Points slip away in fast exchanges, in the middle of the court and when you speed up the wrong ball.
Your practice focus
These are the skills players at 3.5 most often work on. Take the quiz to get the three that fit you.
10 ball target serve
Put a towel in the back third of the service box. Serve 10 balls from each side and count how many land past the front two thirds. Beat your count next time.
Deep return and walk in
A partner serves 10 balls. Aim every return past an imaginary line about 3 feet from the baseline, and walk all the way to the kitchen line after each one.
Drop ladder
Partner at the kitchen line, you at the baseline. Hit 10 drops and count only the ones that land in the kitchen low enough that your partner cannot attack them.
Dink to 20
Cross court dinks with a partner, aiming for 20 in a row with no pop ups. When that is easy, move the ball side to side every third dink.
Soft block wall
Stand just behind the kitchen line while a partner feeds medium pace balls at your body. Block each one softly into the kitchen. Three sets of 10.
Transition reset
Start in the middle of the court. A partner at the kitchen line hits firm balls at your feet. Reset each into the kitchen, then take one step forward after every good reset.
Up before the third
In practice games, say "up" out loud after your return and be set at the kitchen line before the other team hits their third shot.
Net tape filter
In a dink game, say "up" or "down" on every ball you touch: up means you contact it above the top of the net. Only speed up the "up" balls. This is the first read in Pickleball Command.
Middle rule game
Agree on one rule with your partner, for example the player with the forehand in the middle takes it. Play one game calling "mine" or "yours" on every middle ball.
Error tally
Play one game and tally your unforced errors by type: net, long, wide, pop up. Next game, work only on the biggest column.
What moves you up
Players move from 3.5 toward 4.0 by choosing better when to attack, resetting hard balls from the middle of the court, and moving as a pair. There is no shortcut, and nobody can promise a rating, but focused practice on your weakest skills usually shows up as fewer free points for the other team.
The Pickleball Command System
Pickleball Command covers 2.5 to 3.5, so at 3.5 it works as a cleaner decision order and a way to measure your leaks, not as a list of new shots.
